The beginning of 2009

For many of us, the celebration and introduction of a new year means new resolutions and goals.

I am one of those who makes a list of things I'd like to improve on within the new year... and this year started out in just such a way.

However, on Monday January 5th, Will gave me a letter from his principal because he couldn't put it into words, himself. A fellow-classmate had passed on the previous Saturday (the 3rd). Will's and Aura's friend, Patrick Shire, will forever hold a place in their hearts. I took Will and Aura to Patrick's funeral on Friday January 9th. It was one of the hardest things to do... watch your children saying goodbye to a friend of theirs. I know there are harder things.... but this was a first (and hopefully the last... at least until they become adults) for Will and Aura.

So I have changed my resolution to this: Let all my loved ones know that I love them and care for them at every opportunity I can. That should always be the ultimate goal at the top of every new year's resolution.

Patrick O. Shire, by the love of my children I knew you.... and you are one great young man! Heaven is lucky to have you home so soon. May your family always know they will see you again.
