Accentuating the Positives
Wow - when I decided I was going to focus only on the positives in my life, last Friday, I was amazed! A co-worker brought in the Ladies' Home Journal (May edition) for me to read an article from. She left it with me, so of course I read over the entire magazine during my lunch break.
One article, "Let the Joy Shine Through" (p. 20 - 24) was something I needed to read.
1. Don't Believe Everything You Think. Apparently we (as mortal beings) have a lot of negative thoughts throughout the day. I wonder how that would change with the study being upon members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints... or anyone truly devoted to their religion?
2. Notice the Happy Things in Your Life - No Matter How Small. A short parable about a Cherokee grandpa talking to his grandson - I liked it.... "My son, the battle is between the two 'wolves' that live inside us all. One is Unhappiness. It is fear, worry, anger, jealousy, sorrow, self-pity, resentment, and inferiority. The other is Happiness. It is joy, love, hope, serenity, kindness, generosity, truth and compassion." The grandson thinks about it for a minute then asks, "Which wolf wins?" The grandpa answers, "The one you feed."
3. Choose the Happier Thought. Whenever you notice a bad thought, think of an equally true thought that makes you feel better, and just focus on that.
4. Tend to Your Relationships. Women need to bond when they are going through a rough time. Also, acknowledge those around you - it helps.
5. Find Passion and Purpose. Find joy in what you do, no matter how small. It makes all the difference.
The article my co-worker wanted me to read was titled, "Signs of Love." It's an article about an orphaned albino pit-bull that gets a foster home and is found out that she is deaf. The foster owner learns American Sign Language (ASL) in order to communicate with the dog. The funny thing is... it's in an Italian family - you know how they move their hands while talking? :) Poor dog gets confused. My co-worker (who is an interpreter) wanted me to see the article because we struggle to get the parents of the CHILDREN we work with to learn sign language to communicate with their human children, and they won't. Here is a foster owner learning sign language to communicate with a misunderstood breed of animal..... applauds are sent her way, that's for sure.
There is another article about Sally Field. I only glanced through it - haven't read it yet - but it caught my eye because of the larger print that magazines do to get people interested in the article.... "'Oh, I'm just a mom,' you hear women say, JUST a mom? Please! Being a mom is everything!"
Stuff I needed to read on Friday! Wow... Then today I read through the Ensign, the kids' New Era, and Kaylee's Friend magazines.... I just feel really good today. I've got new ideas on how to tackle things and I've gone and helped with landscaping/gardening/weeding for a few hours this afternoon - learning a new "skill." Just full of good feelings right now, and my body being tired from exercise - makes a lot of difference in my day.
God Bless - goodnight.
